Microsoft Excel Error Message
Written by Josh Lyon

So I'm working in Microsoft Excel today and I get this great error message.  It's about as unspecific a warning as you can get.  I've been working with Microsoft products for quite a while, but this message has to be one of the best (REAL) messages I've ever personally seen.  Here's the image:

Microsoft Excel

Catastrophic failure?  Ever been in the middle of writing a long paper and had Microsoft Word crash on you before you could save your work?  I always thought that was a catastrophic failure.  As a side note - always remember to save your documents often!

At least this time I was doing something that is out of the ordinary and is data intensive.  For anyone who is technically inclined, I was querying a local database and converting that data to a local data cube for analysis with ProClarity. Ignore this line - In acronym land that would be: using MSQE in Excel to hit an SQL db using ODBC to do some BI analysis on my EUs in EMA for FPD with my PC from TX in the USA. Laughing  Some of the tables have over 50,000 rows of data, but I've done the exact same query before.

Oh well, I thought

Dad's Birthday

It was my Dad's birthday this weekend and they came up to Dallas to celebrate it.  My girlfriend, Laura, still lives in Austin and she got to ride up with them.  It was nice to be able to see my family before I have to head out to Spain for a month.  Speaking of the trip to Spain, it might be pushed back a little bit to accommodate the schedule of the project.

Because my dad's birthday is in January, he usually likes to have one of his favorite meals - Chicken and Noodles.  It's a really simple, but delicious meal that is basically just noodles, chicken, mashed potatoes, and corn.  Because Laura is a vegetarian, she opted out on the chicken and just had Noodles. Bruce and Kathy Witwer, some of my parents best friends, are the ones who made the chicken and noodles and had us over for dinner and games.

My car was overheating this weekend, so I pulled into a gas station and waited for it to cool down.  I pulled the thermostat, which I suspected was the culprit.  After pulling the thermostat, the car was running cool, so I got to drive out to Allen to enjoy the Chicken and Noodles.

On Sunday, Bruce and Kathy, my parents, and Laura's mom came out to my apartment to have lunch.  We went to Cozymels, which is a Mexican food place close by.  Afterwards, my aunt and uncle Randy and Cathy came out to watch the football game.  My cousin, Chris Lyon, plays high-school football and is huge.  At 16, he's over 210 pounds and is a big guy.  We had a few beers, watched the game, and everyone left sometime after around 5 pm.

And here I am at home alone again.  It's actually not been that bad as work has kept me pretty busy. I'm excited about Laura coming up here when she graduates, but I'm going to enjoy traveling at work to keep me busy until she gets here.
