Married!

I was talking to my wife the other day and she recommended that I write another blog post. I haven’t done so in a while and I couldn’t really think about anything to write until I realized that there’s been a major change in my life recently. I went from single to married!

We had been dating for just over 8 years, so it was about time! We had been living together for a few years now – end of college and after. I lived with Laura officially for the last 6 months of my college career, then moved up to Dallas while she finished her last semester. We lived in an apartment in Grapevine for almost 2 years before buying a house in Valley Ranch. Not a whole lot has really changed in our lives that most people would notice other than some expensive metal around each of our fingers (and a big rock on hers).

She’ll probably keep her name as Moidel for the first few months as we have some things that would be easier under her name. We’ll be travelling out of country for her sister’s my sister-in-law’s wedding and getting a new passport isn’t the fastest process in the US. We still haven’t decided exactly what we are going to do with all the bank accounts / credit as I’ve always looked at credit from a single person’s point of view. Your credit history (including longest standing credit card / account) can impact your credit, so I want to make sure we don’t just go closing accounts without thinking about how they impact her Fifo score.

The wedding was a blast and the honeymoon was even better! It was great to see all the family again and celebrate. The photographer was taking a ton of pictures, so I’ll have to post a link to them whenever the photographer puts them up. If I remember, I’ll try to put some pictures up on my website tonight. I put a lot of pictures up on facebook via my blackberry so check them out there if you are too anxious to wait for the ones from my digital camera.

Laura and Josh Lyon Wedding Website

I just realized that I never posted the link to Laura and my new wedding website. Our google rankings aren’t really great so a search for Laura and Josh doesn’t yield good results (yet)… but I figured I should at least link to it from my website. The website has details on the event (ceremony and reception), photos, registry information, etc… and Laura keeps adding stuff!

Check it out here: Laura and Josh Lyon

You can get to it at both JoshAndLauraLyon.com and LauraAndJoshLyon.com.

Shiner Lyon Google

I just wanted to let everyone know that my next goal is to make some pictures or information about my dog the top link on Google when you search for "Shiner Lyon".  Laura seemed to think it was ridiculous that I was doing some search engine optimization on my photo gallery tonight primarily for that reason, but I think it’s fun. Hopefully she (Shiner) will the top result shortly.  As a side effect of getting Shiner promoted, I’ve fixed some of the issues with my com_search component and an issue it had with OpenSEF. If anyone is interested in the apache htaccess hack, let me know via a comment and I can post some information on it.

LorieAndJesse.com

My brother recently proposed to his long time girlfriend (and now fiancée), Lorie.  I’m his best man, so I decided to make him a website.  Check out the photo gallery and sign the guestbook (on the right menu) while you are there.  As you might imagine, the theme is love based.  Their wedding colors are chocolate brown and pink, which was really interesting to work with when I was creating the template.  I was surprised how well gradient fades from pink to brown work and I think the little hearts have the perfect touch.

http://www.lorieandjesse.com

The site information is easily updateable by Lorie and Jesse – as it has a nice user friendly interface.  They can change / add text on the site using a simple WYSIWYG interface and photos can be uploaded directly from within Windows XP.

For technical purposes:
The main part of the site is simply informational using Joomla as the CMS. I have included a guestbook, which is powered by EasyBook and a photo gallery powered by Gallery2 and the Joomla g2 bridge.

Camaro for Sale

Camaro For Sale Sold!

Sadly, I must sell my car. Normal maintenance and maintenance specific to the camaro has been completed on a regular basis.

The car sometimes takes a second to crank over, but it's been like that for a while (nearly 5 years) and it doesn't affect the car when running.  The motor was replaced at 62,000 miles by GM and the odometer reads 172k, which is why the car was listed at 110k.

  • On that note, I have a file full of dealership receipts and various paperwork that will come with the car.

Dad’s Birthday

It was my Dad's birthday this weekend and they came up to Dallas to celebrate it.  My girlfriend, Laura, still lives in Austin and she got to ride up with them.  It was nice to be able to see my family before I have to head out to Spain for a month.  Speaking of the trip to Spain, it might be pushed back a little bit to accommodate the schedule of the project.

Because my dad's birthday is in January, he usually likes to have one of his favorite meals – Chicken and Noodles.  It's a really simple, but delicious meal that is basically just noodles, chicken, mashed potatoes, and corn.  Because Laura is a vegetarian, she opted out on the chicken and just had Noodles. Bruce and Kathy Witwer, some of my parents best friends, are the ones who made the chicken and noodles and had us over for dinner and games.

My car was overheating this weekend, so I pulled into a gas station and waited for it to cool down.  I pulled the thermostat, which I suspected was the culprit.  After pulling the thermostat, the car was running cool, so I got to drive out to Allen to enjoy the Chicken and Noodles.

On Sunday, Bruce and Kathy, my parents, and Laura's mom came out to my apartment to have lunch.  We went to Cozymels, which is a Mexican food place close by.  Afterwards, my aunt and uncle Randy and Cathy came out to watch the football game.  My cousin, Chris Lyon, plays high-school football and is huge.  At 16, he's over 210 pounds and is a big guy.  We had a few beers, watched the game, and everyone left sometime after around 5 pm.

And here I am at home alone again.  It's actually not been that bad as work has kept me pretty busy. I'm excited about Laura coming up here when she graduates, but I'm going to enjoy traveling at work to keep me busy until she gets here.

Moved to Dallas

I moved to Dallas last month!  It's been an interesting transition as I begin "real life."  Someone asked me if I felt different now that I was done with school and would be working full time.  What's funny is it really doesn't feel that different.  But I have a feeling that's all about to change soon.  Things really haven't been that different up until now.  When I was in school, I would come back to Dallas to visit friends over the winter break and I was working 20-30 hours at Circuit City while going to school full time (15 hours).

But things are starting to change.  Everyone has started going back to school at A&M, Oklahoma, UT, etc… and I'm still here.  Laura is going home this weekend and I'll be left here without many of my friends around.  I've been working full-time in my new career.  Although the hours aren't much difference than school+work, the actual work is completely different.  Instead of selling TV's and other electronics, I'm now working as a Business Analyst for a global manufacturing company.  The coolest part is, I'll be traveling around the world.

The company is sending me on my first trip to SPAIN!  I'll be there for a month, so it should be pretty exciting.  I need to get a new digital camera so I can take pictures and upload them to my website.  I've uploaded a few albums as a sample, but I plan on uploading more pictures as I go.

PS. I'm living in Grapevine, just north of Grapevine Mills Mall and I'm working in Las Colinas (Irving).
