How to Restart Jailbroken Apple TV

There are a number of different ways to restart your Apple TV. Depending on your setup, each one has it’s own benefits. I’ve listed a few of the different methods below.

MENU + DOWN
If you press and hold the MENU and DOWN button on the Apple TV remote for 6 seconds, the Apple TV will perform a complete reboot. Some people have mentioned that a downside to this is if you are running a tethered jailbreak you will have boot the device back up tethered. If you are running an untethered jailbreak – like GreenPois0n RC6 or newer – then this is probably the simplest method to reboot your device as it only requires the remote control.

SSH: killall AppleTV
This method requires you to SSH into your Apple TV using a client like Putty (or a Terminal) and issue the “killall AppleTV” command. Please note that the command is case sensitive. The benefit to this method is if you are running a tethered jailbreak, you will not have to get out your computer to do a tethered jailbreak. A downside of this method is it only works if you have a network connection to your device and you have to have a PC or other device to issue the command.

Pull the Power Plug
This is probably the most drastic method of all the ones I’ll list, but it works in a pinch. As you may expect, some people claim that using this method may be bad for your device. I personally try not to pull the plug on any of my devices, but I’ve occasionally had to use this method. If you are running a tethered jailbreak, this method will also require you to get out a computer to boot tethered.

Restart XBMC Live from SSH (Bash Shell)

As an update for XBMCbuntu, you can run the following command to start/stop XBMC:

sudo service lightdm [start|stop|restart]

Original Post:

I always forget the command for restarting XBMC Live from the shell, so I figured I would post it to my blog. It’s a really simple, one-line command:

sudo /etc/init.d/xbmc-live restart

Then enter the password for the root account (typically ‘xbmc’).

Just to be clear, the benefit of running this command instead of a full reboot (sudo reboot) is the above command only restarts the XBMC Live application. This means if you have any other services or apps running (like SABnzbd+), you can keep those apps running.

The only reason I’ve ever really needed the xbmc-live restart command is when something gets locked up on XBMC… and that usually only happens when I’m trying out new skins or plugins.

I should also note that on occasion this command will not restart XBMC live. The alternative is to stop, then start XBMC again using the following commands:

sudo /etc/init.d/xbmc-live stop
sudo /etc/init.d/xbmc-live start

AIM Virus Removal Instructions

Another Old Content Update. I'm not hosting the Automatic Removal Tool anymore, so who knows when the link will expire.

Realphx / TalkStocks ( AIM Virus ) Removal Instructions / Tools:

Download the Removal Tool (automated javascript) — Just download it and run it. (or just open it directly)

These may have appeared in your profile if you have been infected:

"Whoa….look what I found, click here"

OR

"I can't believe I found 'yourScreenName' Picture here"

Manual Removal Instructions:

  1. Press the CTRL, ALT, and DEL keys at the same time to bring up the task manager.
  2. Click on the processes tab (windows 2000/XP), and find 'b.exe', 'bbb.exe' or 'av.exe' and kill the process.
  3. Go to C:\Windows\ and delete 'b.exe' and 'bbb.exe' or 'av.exe' (or do a search for the virus: click Start > Search > look up each virus individually) Delete these when you find them.
  4. Click Start, then click on Run, type in "Msconfig" in the box and press ENTER.. When the box comes up, click on the "startup" tab and look for "b.exe" or "av.exe" listed (possibly listed under"antivirus") then uncheck the box to the left. (Windows 98/XP only)
  5. Clear your profile (or make a new one) and restart.
  6. When the msconfig box comes up after restart just check the box telling it not to come up again.

IMPORTANT: If you are seeing many other effects like "adult links" and extra toolbars in your Internet Explorer, the virus has also installed other programs called spyware and adware. To remove them download and run Spybot and Ad-Aware then update and run a full system scan with each.
